Vietnam reports the first case of the monkeypox virus

Vietnam

The Health authorities in Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City on Monday announced the country's first case of the monkeypox virus. However, the health authorities did not provide further details about the patient.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), monkeypox is a viral disease that can be spread to a person from another person. It is caused by the monkeypox virus, recognised as the most crucial orthopoxvirus infection.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recommended the monkeypox vaccine to people who are in close contact with someone who has monkeypox; people who know a sexual partner was diagnosed with the disease; and gay or bisexual men who had multiple sexual partners in the last two weeks.

Last month, the CDC report said that infections in people with HIV and other STDs can be a bigger issue. The report also revealed that around 41 per cent of Monkeypox patients had been diagnosed with an STD.

Last month, China reported the first monkeypox case in the southwestern city of Chongqing in an individual who arrived from a foreign country. Subsequently, the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned its citizens not to touch foreigners.

The WHO has already declared a global health emergency over the monkeypox outbreak in more than 92 countries. The monkeypox virus has been spreading mainly to gay men who have sex with other men. It typically causes rashes on the skin and private parts of the body.

According to the CDC, deaths from non-endemic countries have also been reported amid the outbreak. Earlier, CDC also warned that kids below the age of 8 were more vulnerable to developing severe illness if infected with the monkeypox virus. CDC urged people, especially children to stay away from monkeypox patients as people can get the virus through close and direct contact with an infected person.
