With a commitment of US$1.2 million, the United Arab Emirates has announced a new cooperation with the UN Climate Security Mechanism (CSM) to enhance the UN's ability to address the interconnections between climate change, peace, and security. As part of the relationship, the UAE will pay US$600,000 annually for two years, making it the first donor from the Global South to do so to the CSM.
Undersecretary for Energy Transition and Sustainability Affairs Abdulla Balalaa underlined the UAE's dedication to proactive diplomacy and international cooperation on global concerns. In order to evaluate climate-related security threats and create risk avoidance and management plans, the partnership will finance the hiring of a Climate Security Advisor at the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
The UAE's relationship with the CSM is welcomed by Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, who said that it has a good influence on global peace, security, and climate initiatives. The UAE's dedication to the collaboration highlights its continuous endeavors to propel the global agenda for peace, security, and climate change.
