Under President Joko Widodo, also referred to as Jokowi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Indonesia have developed a closer partnership. The building of the Joko Widodo Mosque in Abu Dhabi, which symbolizes the strong links between the two countries, is one noteworthy feature of this relationship.
The mosque, which opened to the public in late 2023, is located on a street named for President Jokowi in Abu Dhabi's diplomatic district. It was entirely financed by the UAE government and has space for about 2,500 worshipers. The initial, smaller mosque was transformed into the opulent, 3,766 square meter complex by the time construction finished in October 2023, having started in 2021.
In recognition of President Jokowi's efforts to fortify bilateral relations, UAE Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, popularly known as MBZ, decided to construct the Joko Widodo Mosque. MBZ personally directed the project; he became the president of the UAE in 2022 following the death of his half-brother, President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed.
The Joko Widodo Mosque emphasizes the value of cultural and religious diplomacy in international relations by serving as a symbol of the robust and expanding ties between Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates.
