UAE's Support for Media Freedom: Enhancing Press and Media Institutions' Independence and Self-Censorship

The UAE Constitution upholds essential rights like freedom of the press, expression, and opinion. The nation has taken a number of steps to guarantee the greatest levels of self-censorship and independence for media and press institutions. The National Media Council released the Electronic Media System in 2018 to support digital media as part of their joint efforts with the Ministry of Information to develop the media sector.

By drafting a federal law to control media issues and operations, the UAE is now going even farther in upholding media freedom. The law, which replaces Federal Law No. 15 of 1980 on the press and publications, is in compliance with national laws and international commitments. The bill intends to promote press freedom, and media institutions, specialists, academics, attorneys, the Emirates Journalists Association, and organizations from civil society have all been consulted.

The new law seeks to protect journalists' right to practice their profession and the free flow of information. It also forbids previous censorship. Also, it is against the law to detain or arrest journalists. The law is currently undergoing final review in preparation for release soon.

These actions show the UAE's dedication to media freedom and the nation's efforts to develop the media sector while enhancing the freer environment in which it operates. In terms of areas, resources, media, press, and digital platforms, the UAE is already regarded as one of the most prominent nations. Under the new law, the UAE plans to improve its media landscape and give journalists and media workers more opportunity to work freely and independently.

The UAE is a shining example of a nation that values fundamental liberties and takes measures to assure their protection, in conclusion. The UAE's dedication to media freedom is demonstrated by the new draft federal law on media affairs and activities, and its adoption will boost the already strong media sector in the nation. The UAE is establishing a norm for media freedom that other nations might aspire to by collaborating with civil society organizations and other stakeholders.
