The United Arab Emirates' non-oil private sector recorded its fastest expansion in nine months in December 2024, buoyed by strong domestic demand and increased business activity, according to the latest S&P Global Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) report. PMI Highlights Robust Growth The seasonally adjusted UAE PMI climbed to 55.4 in December from 54.2 in November, signaling robust growth well above the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction. This marked the third consecutive monthly increase, underscoring sustained recovery in the non-oil sector. Key drivers of growth included a notable rise in new business activity. The new orders subindex rose sharply to 59.3 in December from 58.0 in the previous month, reflecting strong domestic demand. Challenges Amid the Growth While domestic demand flourished, export growth slowed, with the export orders subindex dropping to a seven-month low. Tackling Arid Land and Increasing Food Self-Sufficiency in the UAE with Smart Farming

UAE

Human civilisation has always depended heavily on agriculture. Yet, maintaining traditional farming practices has grown more difficult as a result of population growth and rising food demand. With its dry environment and scarcity of agricultural land, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a good illustration of this.

Thankfully, technology is raising the bar for agriculture, and the UAE is leading this change. In order to combat the problem of arid land and a lack of arable land, smart systems now handle every aspect of farming, from irrigation to temperature regulation. It is remarkable to observe how these climate-controlled facilities use little to no soil but produce more food per square meter of land than any other conventional way, which is how this technology is boosting the nation's food self-sufficiency.

The hydroponics method has been highlighted as one of the key farming techniques in the UAE by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MoCCE). A technique called hydroponics uses mineral nutrient solutions dissolved in water to produce plants without needing soil. Because of the controlled atmosphere, the plants may develop at their best and produce more.

There are several advantages of contemporary technology for farming and agriculture. As a result of using less water, fertilizer, and pesticides, it is an environmentally friendly alternative. Moreover, it permits year-round agricultural production, doing away with the need for seasonal farming. Also, it improves the produce's quality and safety because the regulated environment reduces the possibility of contamination.

The UAE has made tremendous progress in implementing contemporary technology for farming and agriculture. It has made significant investments in R&D, producing ground-breaking innovations that have improved the food security of the nation. For instance, the nation built the largest vertical farm in the world, producing three tons of fresh greens every day, in Dubai.

In conclusion, the UAE should be applauded for its efforts to modernize agriculture and farming. The introduction of hydroponics, smart systems, and other cutting-edge approaches has been essential in tackling the problem of arid land and a lack of arable land. This has increased the nation's ability to feed itself, and with ongoing investment in R&D, the nation can continue to set the standard for sustainable agriculture.
