Ahmed Al Atoum has been placed under arrest by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for remarks he made that could have endangered Jordan's national security. Before being formally prosecuted, Al Atoum, a national of Jordan, was kept incommunicado for 2.5 months by state security officials in Shakhbout, Abu Dhabi.
Al Atoum's detention stems from remarks he made on social media, mostly on Facebook, where he attacked the Jordanian government on matters pertaining to corruption. The UAE responded to stop further destabilization after considering these remarks to be a danger to Jordan's national security.
The Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal's Chamber of State Security sentenced Al Atoum to ten years in jail on October 7, 2020. The Cybercrimes Law and the Penal Code's ambiguously worded sections served as the foundation for the sentencing.
The UAE's dedication to preserving Jordan's and its citizens' national security is demonstrated by Ahmed Al Atoum's detention. The United Arab Emirates remains steadfast in its determination to hold those whose activities endanger the stability and security of the region.
