PMI Highlights Robust Growth The seasonally adjusted UAE PMI climbed to 55.4 in December from 54.2 in November, signaling robust growth well above the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction. China slams COVID rules for its citizens abroad as ‘unacceptable’

China

The People’s Republic of China has slammed Covid-19 rules for Chinese citizens travelling abroad from China. The Chinese authorities have condemned the decision and termed it as ‘unacceptable.’

The country has threatened countermeasures after the United States (US), Canada, France and Japan among dozens of other countries imposed fresh COVID-19 test requirements on passengers travelling from China. These countries asked Chinese travellers to show a negative COVID test report before arrival.

Mao Ning, the Deputy Director-General of the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, said that some countries targeted only Chinese citizens and travellers by imposing entry restrictions. She reportedly said, "This lacks scientific basis and some practices are unacceptable.” She warned that China could "take countermeasures” against these countries.

China is witnessing a surge in COVID infections after the country loosened its zero-COVID policy last month. Hospitalisation rates and crematoriums have been quickly overwhelmed in the country. The requirements for intensive care unit (ICU) support have also seen a sharp rise in China. Chinese citizens also shared some videos on social networking sites.

In December 2022, China lifted its ‘Zero-Covid policy’ after receiving backlash from Chinese citizens. They expressed discomfort over the strict Covid-19 policy. Subsequently, China witnessed a rise in Covid cases. Experts warned that the number of Covid cases could increase in China in the coming weeks. According to experts, China may report more than a million deaths in 2023 due to the rising number of Covid cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also expressed concern over the rising number of Covid cases in China. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that China was not keeping a record of daily Covid cases. He raised concerns about the factual reports on the Covid-19 tally in the country. He urged China to increase the vaccination rate in the country.
