In the first ODI match between India and New Zealand on Wednesday in Hyderabad, Shubman Gill blasted his first double-century off just 145 balls. He was the fifth Indian cricketer to accomplish the record, and his innings were studded with eight enormous sixes and 19 extra-large boundaries.
The accomplishment had previously been
accomplished by Ishan Kishan, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Sachin
Tendulkar. In addition, he broke Kishan's record for the youngest cricketer to
score a double century in one-day internationals.
For the young player, who looked entirely in
control against the New Zealand bowlers, it was a nearly flawless performance.
With Rohit, he put together a reliable 50-run partnership for the first wicket,
and even when Rohit was out, Gill continued to bat with little apparent
discomfort on the even-bouncing pitch.
Even after India lost two quick wickets in the
form of Virat Kohli and Ishan Kishan, the right-hander kept playing his shots.
In addition to scoring his third ODI century, Gill also became the Indian
batsman to reach 1000 ODI runs most quickly, overtaking players like Virat
Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.
