Yoon Sok Yol, the President of the friendly Republic of South Korea, is currently in the UAE for a visit that is expected to last a few days. In addition to meetings with the Korean President and various state officials to discuss and visit development projects, His Excellency Yoon Sok Yol will participate in the World Future Energy Summit events that are held as part of the “Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.”
National security adviser Kim Sung-han earlier
told reporters: “President Yoon's firm commitment to focusing our diplomacy on
vitalizing the economy and increasing exports is reflected in President Yoon's
choice of the UAE for the first foreign trip of the year and the first visit to
a country in the Middle East.”
He added that the first state visit to the UAE
shows the two nations' desire to advance their unique strategic partnership to
a higher level. “Through this visit, we will drastically strengthen our
strategic cooperation with the UAE, which is our brother nation, in the four
core areas of nuclear power, energy, investment, and the defence industry,” he
said.
Around 30 memorandums of understanding
involving governments and the corporate sector are allegedly close to being
signed by the two sides. Energy, arms, and investment are among the main areas
of cooperation.
An announcement on a deal to transfer South
Korean weapons to the UAE is scheduled, according to a top presidential
official.
The official stated that, “the environment is
particularly favourable for security or military cooperation between South
Korea and the UAE involving the arms sector.”
A business group made up of representatives
from over 100 South Korean enterprises will also be travelling with Yoon to
assist their expansion into the UAE and explore opportunities for collaboration
with UAE sovereign wealth funds.
Yoon will depart the UAE on Tuesday for
Zurich, Switzerland, where he will meet South Korean citizens before continuing
on to Davos, where he will attend the World Economic Forum from Wednesday to
Thursday.
The president will meet with the CEOs of
significant international corporations in Davos to explore how the public and
private sectors can cooperate to address the complicated global issue and
secure sustainable growth.
From among the heads of South Korean
conglomerates, the CEOs of Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Lee Jae-yong,
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, and Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Euisun Chung,
as well as those of Intel, IBM, Qualcomm, JP Morgan, and Sony, will be among
the group.
The president will deliver a special speech to
the forum on January 19 about how the international community should come
together to handle the current economic crisis.
He will discuss ways that nations may work
together and stand united to enhance supply chains, make the switch to clean
energy, and build a digital economy. He will also discuss South Korea's role
and commitment to attaining these objectives.
The following day, Yoon will travel to Zurich
to the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology to meet with academics and talk
about collaboration in science and technology.
