UAE presents the Human Rights Council with new labor market regulations

UAE

The UAE submitted its legal framework, which governs the local labor market, offers social security, and assures UAE workers have decent working conditions in accordance with the Paris Principles, to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC).

The delegation for the UAE's fourth Human Rights Report at HRC in Geneva was made up of several federal and local government agencies as well as civil society organizations.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE) has modified its laws governing employment relationships in the private sector in recent years, according to Shayma Al Awadhi, acting assistant undersecretary for communication and international relations.

Before leaving their home countries, foreign employees must be informed of their job rights, terms, and conditions according to a transparent contractual policy that the UAE has designed and executed.

"It has also been prohibited dealing with any unlicensed recruitment agencies or agents in the UAE or abroad, as well as charging these workers any recruitment fees," she continued.

Discrimination on any basis, as defined by international treaties, is clearly defined and illegal under the new labor laws. The laws also outlaw sexual harassment in the workplace and any other forms of aggression against employees, giving them the ability to end their employment relationship without losing their rights immediately if their rights were infringed.

The MoHRE has given employees at various levels of professional achievement a variety of avenues via which they can file legal complaints and obtain responses in more than 20 different languages. In order to resolve problems peacefully, assistance is given to employees as well as reconciliation with employers; if such settlements were not feasible, the judiciary would be consulted.

Al Awadhi emphasized that the UAE has a "advanced technological infrastructure, which contributed to developing online and smart systems used in inspections and proactive monitoring
