The number of Chinese citizens living in the UAE has doubled to 400,000 since 2019 and about 6,000 Chinese companies operate in the UAE, Chinese government figures show.  A  vibrant Chinese population  and good international schools are key factors when Chinese citizens make comparisons between work and residency options in Dubai, Europe, Asia, the US, Canada or Australia.   “The basic reason is for family, I want my family to live together,” says Ms Wu, a lawyer who specialises in intellectual property rights. “I’m also interested in how to support my son’s education. I don’t want to keep changing the environment as he grows older. “I want a stable situation for my family.”

UAE starts a project for an industrial census

Image
Today, the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC), the members of the Industry Development Council, and the regional statistics offices joined forces with the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) to begin the Industrial Census initiative. The project's goal is to compile a thorough database of all businesses that engage in industrial activity as defined by the International Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities (ISIC4 - Section C), including those operating in free zones, regardless of whether they have an industrial or non-industrial licence. The action is in accordance with Ministerial Decision No. 6 of 2023, which governs the procedure for industrial establishments to send information to MoIAT, and Federal Decree-Law No. 25 of 2022, which governs the regulation and development of the industry. The project was unveiled at a press conference held in Abu Dhabi by MoIAT. A dependable and adaptable method for industrial bu

UAE schools to start later so teenagers get more rest

Image
Mary Carskadon, a professor of psychiatry and human behaviour at Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island, was in the  UAE  this week to explain why she believes schools and parents would benefit from the school day starting later.  "We have to ask ourselves a difficult question. Who is the school start time designed to serve? Is it designed to serve parents and teachers or to get the best out of our children?” said Mr Murphy.  “I think what we need to see is a call to arms for research funding to really understand the scale and nature of this issue, because templating in what works elsewhere, doesn't work,” he said. “It can't work. Because what works is specific to a culture and to a population. “I think we need to see prioritisation, not on transplanting existing knowledge, but understanding from the bottom up, what's going on, what will work and trying to fix it.”

The UAE has expressed its strong condemnation of these criminal acts in a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC), as well as its unwavering opposition to all acts of terrorism and violence that threaten security and stability and go against fundamental human values. The ministry also sent its deepest sympathies and condolences to the Israeli government, its citizens, and the relatives of the victims of this horrific murder. It also wished everyone who was hurt a swift recovery. The shooting in Neve Yaakov, a Jewish settler neighbourhood in Israeli-occupied east Jerusalem, happened as worldwide appeals for

UAE astronaut will one day set foot on the Moon

Image
Dr Al Neyadi, who is set to embark on the Arab world’s first long-duration   space mission   on February 26, said the country’s space programme would follow “wherever humanity is going”. Nasa has introduced Artemis, an ambitious project that aims to build a sustainable presence of astronauts in lunar orbit and on the Moon's surface. It is crucial for the space agency to find capable international partners to help meet the budgetary and timetable demands involved in building the Lunar Gateway — an orbiting station to house astronauts. “The UAE, I think, is going wherever the humanity overall is going,” Dr Al Neyadi, who will participate in a six-month mission to the International Space Station next month, told  The National  in an interview on Thursday.  “We also saw the successful Artemis 1 launch, it was a great proof of concept,” said Dr Al Neyadi. “Soon we'll have some people on board the Orion capsule and, definitely, the UAE will try to be a part of that. “We all know th

Ukraine eyes fighter jets after tanks, Russia scorns Germany for sending Leopards

Image
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has agreed to send its Leopard 2 battle tanks to Ukraine, and reports suggest Washington is also poised to send dozens of M1 Abrams tanks. Both armoured vehicles are more powerful than scores of Soviet-era battle tanks fielded by both Russian as well as Ukrainian forces. Kyiv has long called on Western allies to send tanks, arguing they could help turn the tide against Russian forces. But the two countries had been hesitant. While Washington indicated logistical and maintenance challenges Ukrainians could come across if they were to receive the Abrams, Berlin expressed concern over escalating the deadly war. "The next big hurdle will now be the fighter jets," said Yuriy Sak, who advises Ukraine's Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov. The war-torn nation says it will now push for Western fourth-generation aircraft such as the American F-16, as its air force has a fleet of ageing Soviet-era fighter jets that are decades old. Before the invasion,

Why 39 mass shootings already this year cannot be considered abnormal in US

Image
The US state of California is reeling from its third mass shooting in just eight days after 66-year-old suspect Chunli Zhao, from the coastal city of Half Moon Bay, shot dead seven former co-workers. He was arrested after driving to a police station. The incident comes just a couple of days after a mass shooting in Monterey Park, about six hours southeast of Half Moon Bay, during Lunar New Year celebrations that left 10 people dead and injured 10 more. And just over a week ago, six people were killed at a property in central California. But such nightmarish mass shootings cannot be considered abnormal in the US. There have already been 39 mass shootings across the country in the first three weeks of this year, with five of them in California. Nearly 70 people have been killed in mass shootings so far in 2023, data from the Gun Violence Archive show. The not-for-profit research group classifies a mass shooting as any armed attack in which at least four people are injured or killed, exc

Thanks for love and kindness": Ardern makes final appearance as New Zealand PM

Image
"I want you to know that my overwhelming experience in this job of New Zealand and New Zealanders has been one of love, empathy, and kindness," outgoing New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, in a cloak of feathers, thanked her country in her last official speech held at a traditional Māori event on Tuesday. The 42-year-old politician took the nation by surprise in announcing her resignation as leader of the ruling Labour Party and as prime minister last week, saying she did not have "enough in the tank" to lead. She choked up while detailing how six "challenging" years in the job had taken a toll. Ardern, who at 37 became the youngest female head of government in the world when she took office in 2017, steered the nation through the Covid-19 pandemic and the recession it brought along, the Christchurch mosque shootings in which 15 people were killed and 49 injured, and the White Island volcanic eruption. Although her resignation on 19 January was no l

11 die in van crash in Thailand, including 2 children

Image
Over the Lunar New Year holiday, a passenger van crash in central Thailand resulted in the burning deaths of eleven individuals, including two children, authorities reported on Monday. In the kingdom, which has a poor reputation for road safety, traffic accidents are frequent, especially during popular holidays . During its journey from northeastern Amnat Charoen province to Bangkok on Saturday night, the van carrying 12 people drove off the road in central Nakhon Ratchasima province, according to Police Colonel Yingyos Poldej. One passenger was able to escape through a window, according to Yingyos, while the other passengers were all trapped and perished in the fire. Student Thanachit Kingkaew, the survivor, claimed to have been napping when someone screamed, startling him awake. "The van was upside down when I awoke, which was the second thing I noticed. When the final whistle blew, celebrations erupted into the streets of Jumeirah with dancing, flag waving, and shouts of "long live Iraq" ringing out into the air. But according to some celebrators, it was never about the silverwear. “The real victory for Iraqis was not about carrying the trophy," Mustafa Al Baldawi, 44, an Iraqi resident in Dubai "It is for the successful host of the cup [plus it] reduces the gap between Iraq and Gulf neighbours." Thousands of GCC residents poured into Iraq to watch the game for the first time since 1979, which Mr Al Baldawi believes helped Arabs embrace Iraq again.

Trump to pay $1 million to settle "frivolous" lawsuit by Hilary Clinton

Image
Former US president Donald Trump and his attorneys were fined almost $1 million on Thursday for filing a "frivolous" lawsuit alleging that Hillary Clinton tried to rig the 2016 election. The Republican, who wants to run for president again in 2024, was accused by District Judge John Middlebrooks of engaging in a "continuous pattern of judicial abuse" and filing the lawsuit "in order to dishonestly push a political narrative." The complaint, which Middlebrooks dismissed last year, claimed that Clinton and others had spread a false story about Trump's campaign's collusion with Russia. Trump had requested $70 million in compensation. In the 45-page written court judgement, Middlebrooks stated that the lawsuit "should never had been launched." Its weakness as a legal claim was clear right away. No sane attorney would have submitted it. None of the allegations in the modified complaint presented a legally cognizable claim; they were

Amid drug shortage, Chinese People Turn To Traditional Medicines To Treat Covid

Image
Many people are using old-fashioned traditional medicines to treat the aches and pains of the virus as Covid-19 ravages China 's enormous population, sickening millions of people and contributing to a prescription scarcity. Since the beginning of the pandemic, President Xi Jinping has pushed traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and health officials have praised its "vital role" in battling the coronavirus. TCM has been practised for thousands of years to treat a wide variety of diseases. It includes a variety of therapies such as herbal medicines, massages, acupuncture, and diets. Few peer-reviewed studies support claims of its usefulness, according to critics, and it is useless in treating true illness. However, millions of Chinese people utilise it to treat symptoms, frequently in conjunction with western treatment. After contracting Covid, Beijing consultant Yu Lei, 38, developed a fever. To treat his condition, he brewed a herbal tea with ginger, peony roots, liquori
