Global Rankings and Notable Changes in 2024

UAE

In the ever-changing environment of global travel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the most significant climber on the Henley Passport Index during the last decade. According to the most recent report from Henley & Partners, a major worldwide citizenship and residence consultancy organization, the UAE has made significant progress, gaining 106 visa-free locations since 2014. This astounding achievement has moved the UAE from 55th to 11th place in the global passport rankings.

The report, released on Wednesday, is based on exclusive official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and provides an in-depth examination of passport strength based on visa-free travel to various countries.

What distinguishes the 2024 index is the unusual situation in which six countries share the top spot, each providing visa-free access to a record-breaking number of destinations. For the previous five years, Singapore and Japan have boasted the world's most powerful travel documents. However, in 2024, they will be joined by four European Union (EU) member states: France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

These six countries now have passports that allow their people to visit an incredible 194 of the world's 227 places without requiring a prior visa. The accession of four EU countries to the top tier represents a shift in passport power dynamics, breaking Singapore-Japan's dominance during the previous half decade.

South Korea, Sweden, and Finland have also witnessed upward mobility, taking second place with access to 193 places. Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands come in third place, offering visa-free travel to 192 countries.

In the midst of these changes, the United Kingdom has risen to joint fourth place, granting passport holders access to 191 destinations. Meanwhile, the United States remains in joint seventh place, with visa-free entry to 188 destinations. A decade ago, the United Kingdom and the United States tied for first place, illustrating the changing environment of global travel and diplomatic relations.

The rise of the UAE, the reconfiguration of top passport holders, and the reshuffling of worldwide rankings all highlight the ever-changing nature of passport strength and international mobility. As we enter this new era, these developments reflect not only increasing global connection but also an altering landscape of diplomatic ties around the world.
