Billionaire Elon Musk has announced that satellite internet service, Starlink, operated by SpaceX, is now available on all seven continents, including Antarctica.
The Starlink network is primarily designed for people in
rural areas that don't have access to ground-based telecommunication
infrastructure. Last week, in a significant move of installing terminals at the
most extreme locations in the world, Musk's SpaceX tested one of its Starlink
internet terminals at McMurdo Station in Antarctica. Starlink already provides
satellite internet access coverage to 40 countries.
On Monday, the world’s richest man, on Twitter, officially
announced, "Starlink is now active on all continents, including
Antarctica." Earlier, he also said that Starlink will only be used for
peaceful use.
As per SpaceX's website, SpaceX started launching Starlink
satellites in 2019. The satellite internet service also aims for global mobile
phone service after 2023. The website further said, "With high speeds and
latency as low as 20 ms in most locations, Starlink enables video calls, online
gaming, streaming, and other high data rate activities that historically have
not been possible with satellite internet.”
According to the outlet, in 2023, SpaceX also plans to begin
launching Starlink Version 2 satellites. Starlink is also designed to deliver
high-speed broadband internet to locations.
The world’s richest man is always in the limelight for various
reasons. Recently, he has been in the limelight because of the recent
Twitter-Elon deal case.
In April this year, Musk announced the deal to buy Twitter
for $44 billion. Later on, he discontinued the deal, arguing about Twitter’s
spam accounts. Musk said he terminated the $44 billion Twitter takeover deal
because of scepticism over Twitter's spam accounts and bot percentage. He
claimed that Twitter’s method of estimating spam bots and accounts was flawed.
Twitter sued Musk and asked him to buy the social media
platform at the agreed price. Musk also filed a countersuit against Twitter.
