The United Arab Emirates' non-oil private sector recorded its fastest expansion in nine months in December 2024, buoyed by strong domestic demand and increased business activity, according to the latest S&P Global Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) report. PMI Highlights Robust Growth The seasonally adjusted UAE PMI climbed to 55.4 in December from 54.2 in November, signaling robust growth well above the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction. This marked the third consecutive monthly increase, underscoring sustained recovery in the non-oil sector. Key drivers of growth included a notable rise in new business activity. The new orders subindex rose sharply to 59.3 in December from 58.0 in the previous month, reflecting strong domestic demand. Challenges Amid the Growth While domestic demand flourished, export growth slowed, with the export orders subindex dropping to a seven-month low. Abu Dhabi becomes world’s most pandemic-resilient city

Abu Dhabi

The COVID-19 pandemic response in the world's top cities has once again been dominated by Abu Dhabi, according to an analytics group located in London, Deep Knowledge Group (DKG).

The ranking of the safest cities during the COVID-19 pandemic for the second quarter of 2021, published by the Deep Knowledge Group, was based on 114 characteristics that were important to the COVID-19 reaction.

The rating was based on five key factors, including the effectiveness of the government; the economy; the effectiveness of the quarantine system; healthcare administration; and vaccination rates. The categories were applied to 72 cities and municipalities throughout the world, and 50 of the highest-ranking cities were chosen and their best practices and problems were analysed.

The report's initial iteration, which was released in April 2021, listed Abu Dhabi as the world's safest city during the pandemic.

This accomplishment is the consequence of the leadership in Abu Dhabi's direction and ongoing support, which is continuing to make the UAE a secure and wealthy place to live in the wake of the late Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The ranking was also made possible by the dedication of field teams, healthcare experts, top management, and employees from numerous public and private institutions.

Due to actions that improved the speed and efficacy of its reaction to the epidemic, Abu Dhabi came in the first place. The community's health and safety were safeguarded as a result of these actions, which also preserved an open and vibrant economy. As a leader in digital projects, technology, and medical tourism, Abu Dhabi has also retained its reputation as a pioneer in science.

Cities that were recognised as having the best pandemic responses were ranked by DKG. The cities were evaluated on the following criteria: effective health quarantine systems (home quarantine scope and duration; economic support for quarantined people; travel guidelines and restrictions; legal action against home quarantine violators); efficient infrastructure for healthcare management (human competencies and effective medical personnel; advanced tools; effectiveness of diagnostic systems; the number of beds in healthcare facilities; and spending on the healthcare sector); and vaccination rates (incentive packages, exemptions, social support, and credit rating).

In spite of adjusting and expanding healthcare services to safeguard every member of society, Abu Dhabi's aggressive reaction to the pandemic meant that the Emirate maintained a low number of positive cases and one of the lowest mortality rates per capita in the world. Field hospitals, mass testing facilities, and screening facilities with drive-through lanes were all set up in a matter of weeks. Vulnerable groups were given priority in new efforts that included free testing and health checks, the distribution of millions of free meals, the provision of health awareness programmes in numerous languages, and mental health support.

The Emirate has led research and development, aided in scientific breakthroughs to combat the virus, and worked with other countries to create a vaccine. It even took part in the first Phase III trials of an inactivated viral vaccine.

More than 88 per cent of the population of the UAE has already received a free vaccination as a result of Abu Dhabi's pivotal involvement in the country's vaccination drive.

Abu Dhabi keeps on working and improving to preserve the efficacy of its techniques for combating the pandemic and to spread its inspiring story globally to aid in eradicating the COVID-19 virus's effects in various regions of the world.
