UAE: A Beacon of Humanitarian Leadership and Support for Gaza in 2024

In 2024, the United Arab Emirates reaffirmed its role as a global leader in humanitarian assistance, continuing its legacy of fostering international solidarity and cooperation. Celebrating 53 years of progress on its National Day, the UAE emphasized its unwavering commitment to alleviating suffering and enhancing the lives of vulnerable populations worldwide.

Since its formation in 1971, the UAE has contributed over AED360 billion (US$98 billion) in foreign aid, focusing on poverty reduction, disaster relief, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development. This substantial investment has transformed lives and advanced global stability and peace.

Gaza: A Central Focus of Humanitarian Action

Amidst global efforts, the UAE’s unwavering support for Gaza stood out in 2024. Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE launched a series of initiatives to address the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip:

  • Medical Aid for Gaza’s Most Vulnerable: UAE hospitals opened their doors to 1,000 wounded children and 1,000 cancer patients from Gaza, offering critical medical care and treatment.
  • "Birds of Goodness" Operation: The Ministry of Defence’s Joint Operations Command launched an airlift campaign to deliver humanitarian supplies to accessible areas within Gaza. This operation underscored the UAE's determination to provide immediate relief to those in need.

These targeted interventions were part of the UAE's broader commitment to support Palestinians, reflecting the nation’s solidarity and compassion in times of crisis.

Broader Humanitarian and Development Efforts

The UAE’s global initiatives extended beyond Gaza, addressing pressing issues across continents:

  1. Erth Zayed Philanthropies: Launched with a AED20 billion endowment, this initiative aims to improve lives through sustainable development and long-term impact.
  2. Mothers’ Endowment Campaign: With a AED1 billion fund, this campaign honors mothers while promoting education for millions globally, emphasizing the UAE’s belief in nurturing future generations.
  3. Global Hunger and Poverty Alleviation: Allocating US$100 million, the UAE reinforced its commitment to combating hunger and poverty in vulnerable regions.
  4. Reaching the Last Mile: A portfolio of health initiatives contributed AED55 million to the Global Institute for Disease Elimination, combating diseases that affect marginalized communities.

A Legacy of Giving

The UAE’s foreign aid strategy is a testament to its founding principles. Through grants, loans, and partnerships with governments and NGOs, the UAE has supported healthcare, education, and economic growth in developing nations. Its assistance extends to refugees, internally displaced persons, and victims of natural disasters, emphasizing its mission to uplift humanity.

As the UAE celebrated its 53rd year, it stood tall as a beacon of hope and compassion. The nation's efforts in Gaza and beyond showcased its leadership in building bridges of goodwill, fostering global solidarity, and ensuring that no community is left behind. The UAE’s dedication to improving lives resonates as a powerful message of unity, humanity, and progress.
