US official who worked for Joe Biden hired by TikTok

US

According to a Fox Business story, Chinese-owned TikTok has hired one of US President Joe Biden's three press secretaries and a former campaign spokesperson.

Jamal Brown, who served as the US Department of Defense's deputy Pentagon press secretary from February 2021 to February 2022, has accepted a position as the platform's communications director.

Brown will "handle policy messaging" at TikTok, per Politico. Experts have expressed shock over his hire by the Chinese company because TikTok has been called a threat to national security.

Although Mr. Brown's hire by TikTok has not been officially announced, his LinkedIn page has already been altered to reflect that he began working there in October.

His professional background includes more than six years spent working for the White House under the Obama administration. According to a Fox Business article, he worked for the US Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

According to a New York Post story, Missouri Senator Josh Hawley has denounced the employment and referred to the "cosy relationship between the Biden administration and TikTok as disturbing."

A Chinese Communist Party legislation obligates TikTok's parent business ByteDance to divulge user data upon request.

According to Fox Business, the Chinese-owned corporation has spent millions on lobbying, with the White House as the primary objective.

The platform is currently the subject of a national security study, according to Biden administration officials. According to the Trump administration, TikTok might be used by the Chinese government to illegally steal user data from US citizens.

According to the Post, more than 86 million Americans, or more than 25% of the US population, have a TikTok account.
