Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has reaffirmed the United Kingdom's commitment to working in close coordination with Egypt and Israel to facilitate the secure evacuation of British citizens from Gaza. This commitment follows a recent development where the first batch of British nationals was successfully able to leave Gaza through the Rafah border crossing into Egypt.
The situation has prompted swift action, with around 200 British citizens in Gaza registering their need for assistance with the Foreign Office. Authorities have acted promptly to ensure that the Rafah border crossing remains open for "controlled and time-limited periods," providing an opportunity for specific groups of foreign nationals and those who are seriously injured to exit Gaza safely.
Collaborative efforts between the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, as well as Egyptian and Israeli authorities, have resulted in the compilation of a list of British nationals seeking evacuation from Gaza. This collective approach not only aims to facilitate the safe departure of British citizens but also to ensure the uninterrupted flow of vital humanitarian aid into Gaza.
The commitment extends further, with a promise to continue working closely with partners to reopen the crossing when the need arises. This approach will facilitate both the provision of essential aid to Gaza and the safe evacuation of additional British nationals. Regular updates will be made available to all registered British citizens, with advance notification for those on the evacuation list, ensuring a streamlined and secure process for their departure.
