In its attempts to
excel in the healthcare sector the United Arab Emirates has left no stone
unturned in fulfilling the requirements of the citizens and the latest one has
been added by the team of Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine in Dubai
as it has conducted its first living donor kidney transplant.
The operation was
deemed successful on December 6. It was carried out by coordination of
Mediclinic City Hospital along with Mohammed Bin Rashid
University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) and Al Jalila Children’s
Specialty Hospital.
The
first ever living kidney transplant was carried under the programme of MBRU
Organ Transplant Programme. The team in the process carried out a total of five
transplants in the span of 10 days.
The
journey of fulfilling the process started last month when two for the surgeries
were performed. These surgeries were the first of its kind in Dubai. The series
of surgeries kept on going as the third inline was performed by the MBRU team
partnered with Dr Suad Sajwani at the Al Qassimi Hospital.
Apart
from this, two more transplant operations were performed but on deceased donor
kidney at the Mediclinic City Hospital and Al Jalila Children’s.
Another
initiative of the UAE was brought to use when a senior transplant from the
health department asked residents to pledge their organs to Hayat Application.
The application has been built by the United Arab Emirates to make it easier
for the citizens to pledge organs for the benefit of those who need it.
One
of the healthcare experts involved in the surgery, Dr Farhad Janahi Assistant
Professor of Surgery at MBRU and Consultant Urological and Transplant Surgeon
at Mediclinic City Hospital talked to the Gulf news revealing that 17 total
transplants have been conducted since 2016.
“Performing
living donor kidney transplants is a new dawn for our patients with kidney
failure and asserts our medical and surgical teams’ capabilities. Ever since
the kidney transplant programme began in 2016, we have conducted 17 total
transplants to date. The transplant programme has been highly successful and
given the kidney patients a good chance to be productive members of society and
lead a normal family life. I urge people to come out in large numbers to pledge
their organs as well kidneys for donation through the Hayat app. The national
waiting list for organs, especially the kidney is growing and more and more
people need to pledge their organs.”
The
details were revealed by Janahi who said that the first surgery was performed
on November 14 and the patient was a 34-year-old person who was on peritoneal
dialysis since January last year. The surgery was successful as he took the
kidney from the love donor, his wife’s brother.
Experts
have credited great team work and extraordinary research behind the success of
the process.
According to a report,
the UAE has grown three fold this year in terms of healthcare sector. At a time
when the world is tackling the threat of coronavirus, the UAE has not only
managed to deal with the rising covid-19 infections but also improved in other
healthcare sectors.
