If Eid Al Fitr falls on Friday, 21 April, in the United ArabEmirates (UAE), the Eid prayer and the mandatory Friday prayer will be performed separately in the country, said the Fatwa Council of the UAE, a government body responsible for licensing Islamic authorities to issue fatwas.
The Fatwa Council said in a statement, “The issue of performing Friday prayer if Eid Al Fitr falls on Friday is a controversial matter among Muslim scholars, however, the Council rules that each sermon is to be held separately on its time as per its sunnah.”
According to the WAM news agency, the fatwa was approved by Muslim scholars and Islamic schools in the country. The Fatwa Council invoked verses from the holy Quran and the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) while issuing the fatwa.
Eid Al Fitr 2023 marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Muslims wear new clothes, exchange gifts, visit the graves of relatives, gather for family meals, and pray in Mosques. It is the end of fasting for Muslims.
The UAE’s moon sighting committee will announce the exact date of Eid Al Fitr. It usually begins at sunset on the night of the first sighting of the crescent moon.
If the duration of Ramadan is 30 days, workers in the country will enjoy a five-day holiday. If the duration of the holy month of Ramadan is decided at 29 days, the Eid holiday in the UAE will last four days.
According to the Emirates Astronomical Society, the first day of Eid Al Fitr 2023 can be April 21. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, chairman of the society's board of directors, reportedly said, “Most likely, Ramadan this year will be for 29 days. Eid Al Fitr and the first of Shawwal will be on Friday, April 21.”
Eid Al Fitr is decided by the Islamic calendar. It consists of 12 lunar months of either 354 or 355 days.
