UAE Extends Lifeline to Sudanese Refugees in Uganda’s Kiryandongo Camp

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reinforced its reputation as a global leader in humanitarian aid with the distribution of 30,000 food baskets to Sudanese refugees in Uganda’s Kiryandongo camp. This initiative, benefitting nearly 100,000 displaced individuals, represents the second phase of the UAE’s sustained humanitarian efforts, which commenced in April 2024.

A Lifeline for Refugees

The Kiryandongo camp, home to thousands of Sudanese refugees who fled the ongoing crisis in their homeland, has seen its inhabitants struggle with food insecurity and basic needs. The UAE’s food aid has provided a critical lifeline, addressing immediate food shortages and offering hope to a vulnerable population.

The distribution event was overseen by UAE Ambassador to Uganda, Abdullah Al Shamsi, who was joined by Ugandan officials and civil society representatives. During the event, Ambassador Al Shamsi reiterated the UAE’s unwavering commitment to international solidarity, emphasizing the nation’s $100 million pledge to support humanitarian efforts in Sudan and its neighboring regions.

Expanding Support Beyond Food Aid

The UAE’s aid is not limited to food distribution. Ambassador Al Shamsi also highlighted future projects designed to improve living conditions in the Kiryandongo camp. These include:

  • Drilling water wells to ensure access to clean and safe drinking water.
  • Building health facilities to address medical needs and improve healthcare services for the refugees.

These initiatives align with the UAE’s holistic approach to humanitarian support, addressing both immediate needs and long-term challenges faced by displaced communities.

Acknowledgment of UAE’s Efforts

Ugandan Minister Balam Byaruhagara praised the UAE’s ongoing initiatives, describing the aid as a “crucial step” in easing the hardships endured by Sudanese refugees. He emphasized that such contributions play a pivotal role in mitigating the crisis and enhancing the quality of life for those affected.

Civil society leaders and local officials echoed these sentiments, commending the UAE for its proactive approach to global crises and its commitment to upholding human dignity.

A Broader Commitment to Humanitarian Aid

The UAE has consistently demonstrated leadership in addressing global humanitarian crises. Its comprehensive aid strategy for Sudanese refugees includes not only support within Uganda but also across other affected regions. The nation’s pledge of $100 million is aimed at providing relief to those impacted by the Sudanese conflict while fostering stability and hope for a better future.

As the crisis in Sudan continues to force people from their homes, the UAE has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to standing by displaced populations until peace and stability are restored in their homeland. This dedication underscores the UAE’s role as a global partner in promoting peace, development, and human welfare.
