UAE delivers 10 aid convoys to Gaza

On November 26, 2024, Philippine President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. will travel to Abu Dhabi for a one-day working visit aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This meeting with His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, underscores both nations’ commitment to fostering mutual cooperation and exploring new opportunities.
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) emphasized the importance of this trip, highlighting its potential to yield significant agreements that benefit both countries. “The productive dialogues between President Marcos and the UAE leadership are expected to deepen bilateral ties and create avenues for collaboration in areas of shared interest,” the PCO stated.
The UAE has been a longstanding ally of the Philippines, particularly in labor and economic cooperation. The discussions are expected to touch on trade, investment, labor welfare, and shared values of tolerance and respect.
President Marcos will use the opportunity to personally thank the UAE for its continued support of the Filipino diaspora. The UAE is home to over 700,000 Filipinos, who contribute not only to the UAE’s economic development but also play a vital role in sustaining the Philippine economy through remittances.
“The President will express the Philippine government’s gratitude for the UAE’s commitment to fostering a welcoming environment where Filipino talent thrives, supported by values of kindness and tolerance,” the PCO stated.
President Marcos’ visit will be brief, as he has prioritized his immediate return to the Philippines to oversee ongoing relief and reconstruction efforts following a series of devastating typhoons. His limited schedule means fewer public engagements, a decision that has been met with understanding by the Filipino community in the UAE.
“The President regrets not being able to meet more of our kababayans in the UAE due to the demands of his duties at home. He seeks their understanding as he focuses on urgent matters affecting the nation,” the PCO added.
This visit comes after President Marcos had to cancel a planned trip to Dubai last year for COP28 due to a hostage crisis involving Filipino seafarers in the Red Sea. The November 26 meeting represents a chance to reaffirm the Philippines’ commitment to fostering a strong partnership with the UAE, which remains a vital ally in the Middle East.
The Philippines and UAE share a robust partnership built on economic cooperation, labor agreements, and mutual respect. The UAE is a significant trade and investment partner and a hub for Filipino workers seeking better opportunities.
Discussions during the visit are expected to cover:
President Marcos’ dialogue with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed will center on aligning priorities for sustainable development and mutual prosperity. Both leaders aim to advance their nations' roles in the global arena while ensuring the well-being of their citizens.
Though brief, President Marcos’ visit to the UAE represents a significant step in reaffirming and strengthening the Philippines’ relationship with a key ally in the Middle East. By engaging in strategic discussions with the UAE leadership, the Philippines hopes to unlock new opportunities for collaboration that will benefit both nations, their economies, and their people. This visit underscores a shared commitment to fostering partnerships rooted in mutual respect and progress.
