The Humanitarian Crisis Unfolding: Displacement Amidst Conflict in Lebanon and Syria.

The latest flare-up of violence involving Israeli military operations against Hezbollah has resulted in a large-scale humanitarian crisis, with more than 100,000 people fleeing to Syria from Lebanon. According to Filippo Grandi, the head of the UN refugee agency, such a massive forced movement of people due to the current situation in risk prone countries such as the Middle East is a sad symbol of overpolitical governance and violence in the area. There are both Lebanese and Syrian citizens in the escapees, indicating that such violence that knows no bounds is felt in different people as well.

The activities of the UN refugee agency at different crossing points are indicative of the dire need for help for people arriving in new locations. But this is not just an issue of logistics; the international community has a duty to alleviate the pain of those who can no longer live in their own homes. Most of these people in exile suffer the injuries of war and the possibility of relocation to the unknown. Without a safe place, small rations, and access to health services, these groups are at further risk, thus they require swift intervention to lessen their suffering.

While the entire globe sits and looks at this crisis developing, it is critical to understand these numbers represent real families and children, with their lives being disrupted. The displacement of more than one hundred thousand people is a clear indication of how such geopolitical clashes have repercussions on the human race. The resources of the world should be put into action in the process of developing an appropriate plan to care for those who have been displaced, stating the persistence of conflict and the need for active communication as the means of preventing such occurrences. There must be such a collective effort if the calm is to be restored and the hopeful turn extended to those who are being turned away from the violence.
