In the latest development in the Amber Heard vs Johnny Depp row, Heard's insurance company has claimed that Depp was willingly defamed by his ex-wife. Moreover, the insurance company has also refused to pay for the damages Heard owes her ex-husband.

As per a report by Lawandcrime.com, New York Marine and General Insurance Company claimed she ‘wilfully’ defamed Depp and filed a lawsuit against Heard in the United States District Court.

Amber Heard's Insurance company claims

Reportedly, Heard had a $1 million liability policy with which she could have paid some amount of money that she owes Depp. However, the insurance company has the right to refuse to pay for her if she is found committing "willful” and "malicious" misconduct. Her insurance company doesn't want to pay any costs of ongoing litigation. The company claimed that ‘an insurer is not liable for a loss caused by the willful act of the insured’.

Her insurance coverage was from July 2018 to July 2019. During that time, she wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post, in which she claimed to be a survivor of domestic abuse. Depp sued Heard for defamation because of the op-ed. Later on, Heard countersued Depp for $100 million in 2021.

In the final verdict in June, Heard was ordered to pay $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, and Depp was ordered to pay Heard $2 million overall.

This week, Heard challenged the court’s final verdict in the defamation suit against Depp. Heard`s legal team submitted a motion demanding that the final decision in Depp`s defamation trial be overturned, including the $10.35 million in damages given to Depp by the jury. Heard’s lawyer also claimed that the actress was unaware of the headline of her article. However, Depp’s legal team dismissed the appeal.
