Greece Urges European Union To Assist In Extending Border Wall To Stop Migrant Influx

Greece Urges European Union

The Greece government requested the European Union (EU) to assist in extending border walls to stop the migrant influx. Amid the Poland-Belarus border crisis, Greece urged the EU for funds in 2022 to construct a border wall across its boundary with Turkey. The Greek government had already stated that it would not allow migrants to enter Europe amid the Poland-Belarus border crisis.

Greece reportedly wants to prevent illegal migrants from entering the nation. Reportedly, Greece recently intensified the nation's migration policies to stop illegal migrants from entering the nation. A 26-kilometre expansion of a steel border wall was recently finished in Greece.

Takis Theodorikakos on migrants crossing borders

Takis Theodorikakos, a public order minister, told a parliamentary committee that Greece suspects that some countries bordering the EU will put political pressure to exploit migration. The minister also cited concern over the Poland-Belarus border. Reports of violence come from both sides of the Poland-Belarus border. Many migrants got stuck at the border when Poland denied them entry. Takis Theodorikakos further said, “We believe the security on our own borders is linked to the security of the EU.”

The border wall with Turkey

Reportedly, in August, Greece announced the completion of a 40-kilometre border wall with Turkey, so that no one can enter the country illegally. The Greece government also talked about the installation of a monitoring system, to discourage potential asylum seekers from attempting to enter Europe following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan.

According to AP, the Greece government denied repeated allegations made by human rights activists and migrant advocacy groups that illegal deportations take place at the border. The migrant advocacy groups said that border interceptions include illegal summary deportations known as pushbacks, but the government denied such claims. However, recently, 10 illegal migrants crossing borders were detained. They were trying to enter Greece and Turkey illegally.
