PMI Highlights Robust Growth The seasonally adjusted UAE PMI climbed to 55.4 in December from 54.2 in November, signaling robust growth well above the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction. This marked the third consecutive monthly increase, underscoring sustained recovery in the non-oil sector. Key drivers of growth included a notable rise in new business activity. The Plight of Earthquake Survivors in Southern Turkey

As the dust settled after the devastating earthquakes that struck southern Turkey six months ago, the survivors sought refuge in the promise of temporary accommodation until permanent housing could be built. However, their hopes are now fading as they find themselves facing forced evictions from the very shelters they were told would be their home until they could rebuild their lives.

The earthquakes that hit the 11 disaster-struck provinces on February 6 left behind a trail of destruction, claiming the lives of more than 50,000 people in the country. Hundreds of thousands of survivors were forced to leave their homes, seeking safety in other parts of Turkey. The government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, provided a lifeline in the form of student dormitories managed by the Credit and Hostels Institution (KYK) as temporary shelters.

For a time, these dormitories offered a glimmer of hope for the displaced individuals who lost everything. They provided a semblance of normalcy and a place to call home amid the chaos and devastation. However, the promise of support now appears to be short-lived, as survivors claim that they are being coerced to leave the KYK-run dormitories before permanent housing is ready.

The situation is raising alarm and concern for the welfare of these vulnerable communities. The urgency to move people out without providing a suitable alternative is a critical issue that demands immediate attention. It highlights the long-lasting consequences that natural disasters can have on communities, further exacerbating their already traumatic experiences.

Beyond the pressing need for housing, there is also a deeper emotional toll that survivors face. Displaced from their homes, they have endured immense trauma, loss, and uncertainty. Adequate support services are essential to help them cope, heal, and rebuild their lives.

The forced evictions raise questions about the underlying reasons and motives behind the decision. Is the government grappling with limited resources, or are there other interests prioritized over the welfare of the survivors? Transparency and accountability are crucial in understanding the situation fully.
