Countries Currently At War In 2022; Is It A Threat To Global Security?

Global Security

Russia and Ukraine are not the only countries currently at war. There are several other countries currently at war in 2022. War-torn countries have a conflict between different groups in the same country or with another country.

Countries currently at war in 2022

Here is the list of countries currently at war -

Ethiopia: Ethiopia is at war in the Tigray region. The tension between political parties in Ethiopia escalated into a violent civil war in November 2020. This war is now strangling the region. Ethiopia views the TDF (Tigray Defense Forces) as a grave threat to its national security. Reports indicate war crimes are common in this region.

In January, the government announced the lifting of a draconian state of emergency, imposed in November 2021 in Ethiopia as Tigrayan forces fought their way to reach within 100 miles of Addis Ababa, before being pushed back by government forces. The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) is reportedly fighting Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.

Mexico: The drug war in Mexico is an ongoing war between the Mexican government and multiple powerful and violent drug trafficking cartels. According to the global conflict tracker ACLED (Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project), there were 614 fatalities linked to the drug wars in January 2022. In 2022, evidence emerged of gangs using improvised explosive devices against the Mexican army.

Afghanistan-Pakistan: Afghanistan and Pakistan are careening towards war in 2022. On April 14, Afghan border forces fired 35 shells at Pakistani check posts in the Chitral area. In retaliation, Pakistani jets carried out airstrikes in the Afghanistan provinces of Khost and Kunar. At least 47 people were killed in Afghanistan because of the Pakistani airstrikes. Later on, Pakistan expressed serious concerns over the provocations from Afghanistan’s side. Since the Taliban seized power in August last year, border tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have risen significantly.
