3,000 Americans volunteer to fight Russian forces in Ukraine, says report

Russian forces in Ukraine

Around 3,000 Americans have volunteered to fight Russian forces in Ukraine. Since Russia began its invasion on February 24, the officials of Ukraine have urged foreign volunteers to help the country in fighting the Russian forces.

This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on March 3, the formation of an "international legion" of 16,000 foreign volunteers, who were asked to join the defence of Ukraine, Europe and the world.

According to a report by Kyiv's embassy in Washington, joining the International Legion is legal for Americans in most circumstances. The representative from Kyiv's embassy in Washington told VOA News that the volunteers have responded to Ukraine's appeal for people to fight against the Russian forces.

Reportedly, many volunteers have stepped forward from other countries too. Many countries have also provided weapons to Ukraine to fight the Russian forces trying to invade Ukraine.

Reportedly, several hundred volunteers have already arrived in Ukraine. The United Kingdom's foreign secretary Liz Truss said that she supported British individuals who want to go and fight the Russian forces in Ukraine.

Earlier, the European Union (EU) also imposed economic sanctions against Russia and Russian oligarchs and leaders. The United States (US) government also imposed sanctions on two Russian banks, Moscow's sovereign debt, and several other measures.

Russia is continuously making advances in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Ukraine is witnessing intense fighting between the Russian and Ukrainian troops.

On Day 9 of Russia’s war with Ukraine, the Russian authorities took control of Europe's largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine. Reportedly, a fire also broke out at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after it was shelled by Russian troops. Zelenskyy accused Russia of “nuclear terror”.

In 2021, Russia began deploying big numbers of troops close to Ukraine's borders. However, the country denied its intentions of invading Ukraine. Subsequently, the US President Joe Biden warned that Russia may invade Ukraine.
