UAE Continues To Support Tigray With Humanitarian Supplies

Humanitarian Supplies

The UAE is continuing its effort to provide humanitarian aid across the world. In its latest endeavor it has sent 35 tonnes of foodstuffs to Mekelle in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

After blockades issued by Addis Ababa and Afar regions, the United Nations has been warning of a humanitarian crisis where food and supplies has been scarce for the Tigrayans.

In January, Tigray rebels attacked several towns in the Afar region, accusing local authorities of blocking humanitarian trucks from accessing the Tigray region. United Nations has already estimated that thousands of people are suffering from malnutrition and starvation.

According to a media statement made by Mohamed Al Rashidi, Ambassador of the UAE to Ethiopia, ‘sending of food supplies came at the directives of the UAE's leadership to support the humanitarian situation in the Tigray region.’

He emphasised on the UAE commitment to a humanitarian approach that supports emergency relief in countries in need. Al Rashidi added that, “The UAE is keen on supporting the humanitarian situation in the Tigray region and seeks to meet the population's needs resulting from food shortages.”

The UAE also sent six planes carrying 300 tonnes of relief and food supplies, including 200 tonnes of vegetable oil, in cooperation with the World Food Programme to the city of Mekelle last year.

In the same context, the UAE also sent 18.5 tonnes of medical supplies as part of global efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic.
