UAE Non-Oil Business Activity Surges to Nine-Month High in December

 The United Arab Emirates' non-oil private sector recorded its fastest expansion in nine months in December 2024, buoyed by strong domestic demand and increased business activity, according to the latest S&P Global Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) report. PMI Highlights Robust Growth The seasonally adjusted UAE PMI climbed to 55.4 in December from 54.2 in November, signaling robust growth well above the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction. This marked the third consecutive monthly increase, underscoring sustained recovery in the non-oil sector. Key drivers of growth included a notable rise in new business activity. UAE’s exemplary handling of labour camps hands out corona lessons

The United Arab Emirates is heading in the right direction in terms of curbing the spread of coronavirus pandemic. As per the data complied by worldometers.info, the country has a high rate of recovery with 680 recovered cases so far and it has not reported any new deaths. Also, the Gulf nation, which has been quick in its response action to combat Covid-19, has in total 4,123 corona positive cases.

Dr Jacob Cherian, specialist internal medicine, Medcare Medical Centre Marina and medical director for Medcare Medical Centres, pointed out UAE’s early intervention and extensive testing, as the key reasons for its faster recovery rates. Dr Jacob in conversation with the Khaled Times said,"Compared to other countries, the UAE adopted early intervention measures. The UAE closed schools and limited social gatherings when there were hardly any cases."He also applauded complete cooperation shown by residents as another reason for the lower death rates and high recovery rates.

In terms of health care facility, Dr Jacob highlighted that, the Dubai Health Authority marks a patient as completely cured of Covid-19 only after three consecutively negative swab tests results. "Only then are they released from isolation," said Dr Jacob.

UAE has extended its health care services to shield all, ranging from an employer to a labour worker, setting a precedence among its neighbouring nations, as hundreds have been locked in the country due to travel restrictions.

In order to save its workforce (mainly comprising expatriates) from draconian outbreak of coronavirusthe government authorities also implemented a comprehensive awareness campaign against COVID-19 targetingthe health and safety of labour workers.  As part of the awareness drive, Dubai government team visited several labour camps in Muhaisnah, Hatta, Dubai Investment Park, Dubai Industrial City, Al Quoz, Jebel Ali, Al Quoz 1, 2, 3 and 4 and the Expo 2020 site to educate the workers about the precautions and safety measures. The campaign, launched on 22 March, is being conducted by teams from Dubai’s General Directorate of Civil Defense, Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs and Dubai Municipality in collaboration with the Command and Control Centre for Combating COVID-19.

On Saturday, March 11, Dr. Farida Al Hosani, official spokesperson of the UAE health sector, in a press briefing in Abu Dhabi updated the country of current situation of the pandemic.Dr. Al Hosani explained, "In the past few days, we have noticed a remarkable rise in the number of people who have fully recovered. Many of these were mild cases, which usually recover naturally. In some cases, symptoms lasted for two or three weeks. We have observed that a majority of cases registered in the country do not show major complications and severe symptoms."

She added, "Some preliminary studies have shown the effectiveness of drugs such as chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19 treatment. These are drugs used in the country, and their effectiveness, as well as that of other antiviral drugs, is being continuously monitored."Dr. Al Hosani emphasised that "the efforts of our teams in the health authorities are continuing as part of the country's plan to bring the pandemic under control. An increase in testing in recent weeks has enabled us to detect more cases, limit the spread of the virus, and isolate those who came in contact with patients."

On Monday, Chief Minister of South Indian State of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, expressed gratitude towards the UAE government fortaking care of the expatriates from Kerala who are living in the UAE. He said, "We are all together in this fight against a deadly virus that is wreaking havoc across the world. We are sure the UAE and its able and efficient leadership is doing its best to protect the people living in its blessed soil – citizens, residents and visitors."

"While I wish Emirati brothers and sisters a speedy triumph over the virus, we reiterate our utmost regard and respect for the UAE and its leadership and people. Our warm and fraternal bonds have always been symbiotic and will remain so for ages to come," the Chief Minister concluded.
