Abu Dhabi Police Warns Residents of Rising Social Media Scams

In a recent alert, Abu Dhabi Police have sounded the alarm over the return of cunning online scams involving fake auctions and deceptive advertisements for luxury watches. These schemes are being promoted across popular social media platforms, targeting unsuspecting residents with promises of exclusive deals on high-end timepieces.

The Scam Unfolded

According to the police, fraudsters are setting up professional-looking ads and fake auction pages, often using stolen images of genuine luxury watches from reputable brands. These scammers lure potential buyers with "limited-time offers," heavily discounted prices, or private bidding events, creating a sense of urgency that pushes victims to act quickly.

Once trust is built, victims are often asked to transfer money as a deposit or full payment, only to realize later that the auction was fake and the product doesn't exist.

Common Red Flags to Watch Out For

  • 💬 Too Good to Be True Prices: Luxury watches being sold for a fraction of their real value.

  • 🌐 Unverified Pages or Profiles: Many fake auctions operate through newly created or unverified social media accounts.

  • 🕵️ Pressure Tactics: Fraudsters may create urgency by claiming limited stock or bidding deadlines.

  • 💳 Advance Payments: Demands for wire transfers or direct payments without proper verification or a secure platform.

Abu Dhabi Police's Advice

Residents are strongly urged to:

  • Only purchase high-value items from verified sellers or authorized dealers.

  • Avoid transferring money to unknown individuals or bank accounts.

  • Report any suspicious activity or scams through the official channels.

  • Educate friends and family, especially the elderly, who may be more vulnerable to online fraud.

Stay Safe, Stay Alert

The rise of digital shopping and social media marketplaces has undoubtedly made life more convenient—but it’s also opened the door for cybercriminals to exploit unsuspecting users. As fraudsters evolve their tactics, it's more important than ever for residents to stay informed, cautious, and vigilant online.

If you come across any suspicious watch auction or ad, report it immediately to Abu Dhabi Police through their Aman Service at 8002626 or via SMS at 2828.
