Etihad-SAT: UAE's First SAR Satellite Set for Launch Aboard Falcon 9

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has officially announced the launch of its first Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite, Etihad-SAT. The satellite is scheduled to lift off on March 15th, 2025, at 10:39 AM UAE time from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA, aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.

A Landmark Achievement in UAE’s Space Sector

The Etihad-SAT marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s space exploration journey, enhancing the country’s capabilities in remote sensing, Earth observation, and environmental monitoring. Developed in collaboration with Emirati engineers and international experts, the satellite is designed to provide high-resolution imaging irrespective of weather conditions or time of day, thanks to its advanced SAR technology.

SAR satellites use radar waves to penetrate clouds, darkness, and adverse weather, making them highly effective for applications such as disaster management, urban planning, environmental monitoring, and national security. With Etihad-SAT, the UAE aims to strengthen its scientific and technological contributions to global space exploration and data analytics.

The Role of SpaceX’s Falcon 9

The Falcon 9 rocket, developed by SpaceX, is known for its reliability and reusability, making it an optimal choice for satellite deployments. The launch will further bolster UAE’s expanding space ecosystem, aligning with its long-term vision of becoming a global player in space research and innovation.

MBRSC’s Growing Space Ambitions

The MBRSC has been at the forefront of the UAE’s space advancements, with past missions like the Hope Probe, which successfully reached Mars, and the Emirati Astronaut Program, which has sent astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). Etihad-SAT represents another major step in this ambitious journey, reflecting the UAE’s commitment to pioneering scientific discoveries and space technology.

Following the launch, Etihad-SAT will undergo a series of tests and calibrations before becoming fully operational. It will then start transmitting valuable data that will contribute to various sectors, from climate research to infrastructure planning.
