COVID-19 battle: UAE provides tons of medical supplies to Iraqi Kurdistan

As the world continues to grapple with the Coronavirus pandemic, the United Arab Emirates has continued its international humanitarian action to support several countries across the world during the critical time. On May 28, the Emirati government sent six metric tons of medical supplies through an aid plane to Iraqi Kurdistan assisting the country's effort in fighting the global health emergency. The medical supplies provided by the UAE will support approximately 6,000 medical professionals in Iraqi Kurdistan as they work to curb the spread of the virus. Iraq has reported over 5,000 COVID-19 cases as of May 29.

Ahmed Al Dhaheri, UAE Consul-General to the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, responded to the delivery of aid by saying that the UAE stands with Iraq in its efforts to uphold public health and security in light of these difficult circumstances. He added that the UAE is honoured to extend a hand of assistance to Iraqi Kurdistan to aid its fight against COVID-19.

"Our brotherly relations serve as the foundation of this cooperation, through which we will help frontline medical workers combat this virus in a safe and protected manner," said Ahmed Al Dhaheri, reported the state news agency WAM.

Meanwhile, the health ministry of Kurdistan has increased daily COVID-19 testing as the spread of the virus has accelerated in the autonomous region.

As of now, the UAE has provided over 658 metric tons of aid to 57 countries in need during the Coronavirus pandemic as part of its international humanitarian efforts. A number of cargo planes have been deployed by the UAE government to supply medical essentials to the countries in need. The aid has supported more than 658,000 medical professionals in the process across the countries including Congo, the Union of Comoros, and Sudan. Recently, as part of a UN mission to safeguard essential workers from Coronavirus in West Africa, UAE's cargo plane delivered field hospital parts in Ghana.
